Beijing Plaza Competition
Beijing, China | 2009 | Competition entry
Conceiving designs for a new central park in Beijing, we were aware that the surrounding low-rise buildings would create a wall of development that could dwarf the scale of the park. Our proposals sought to create a park that provides a layer of separation from its surroundings, with a bold landscape character that provides a relaxed contrast to the surrounding grid of streets.
Using the classical Chinese garden as inspiration, we worked to create a contemporary, modern park of winding paths, undulating landforms, a ravine, circuitous streams and a lake that reflects its surroundings and pulls light from the sky into the heart of the park.
Like all the best Chinese gardens, the park will take visitors on a journey of concealment and surprise, through a sequence of carefully composed landscapes that reveal elements of nature and facets of the culture and society that surrounds it.
